Hewes lists 72 taxables, presumably for the town of Edenton, Chowan County, N.C. After each person's name are listed the number of wheels (carriages), whites, black males, black females and totals. Hewes himself is name number 3 and is listed as having 2 wheels, 3 household members, 9 male slaves and 1 female slave, making him the 4th largest slave holder. Two men on the list are identified as patrollers.
